porcelain
21 1/2 by 16 3/16 in., plaque

Last quarter, 19th Century. After the original painting, by Gabriel Cornelius von Max (Czech, 1840-1915), circa 1880.
Signed ‘L. Sturm. / Atelier L. Kunst’ (lower center). Titled and inscribed ‘Liebesgeheimniss / von Gab. Max. / gem. v. / L. Sturm.’ (on the reverse).
Impressed scepter, ‘KPM’ monogram mark, and ‘H’ cypher (on reverse). Incised with the KPM rectangular size in inches, ’21 1/2 - 15 3/4’ (on reverse). With blue shield (beehive) mark (on reverse).
L. Sturm probably refers to Leonhard Sturm, a Dresden painter of plaques who participated in the Art and Art-Industry Exhibition in Munich in 1876, or Ludwig Sturm (1844-1926), who trained in painting porcelain plaques at Carl Schmidt’s Institute in Bamberg and was appointed Superintendent of the painting workshop at the Meissen manufactory in 1880, and subsequently Professor and Artistic Director of the manufactory (see W. Neuwirth, Porzellanmaler-Lexicon 1840-1914 (1977), vol. II, p. 288).
